An Enduring Legacy: The Stephen Ward Moore '69 Endowed Scholarship

According to Bonnie J. Moore, her husband Stephen Ward Moore '69, an engineer and well respected leader, believed in treating all people well and helping them reach their true potential. This was true both in the context of his most recent position as COO with Cascade Die Casting Group in the Grand Rapids, Michigan area, and also in personal relationships. When Stephen passed away as a result of a tragic motorcycle accident in June of 2006, Bonnie decided to honor him by creating an endowed scholarship at Kettering University, formerly GMI.

Stephen's brother Dr. Kevin Moore of Syracuse, NY and a world renown pianist and composer, volunteered to perform a concert in Grand Rapids, Michigan to benefit the scholarship. With family and friends in attendance at Bonnie's home in Grand Rapids, Michigan on August 18, 2007, Kevin performed works of Beethoven, Liszt and Chopin and educated the audience about the vastly misunderstood and underrated composer Franz Liszt. It was truly an experience that must have resembled chamber music in Europe in the 1800's. Relatives and friends contributed generously, and the scholarship was born. Bonnie's plan includes an eventual estate gift to the scholarship so that more students can be assisted in their quest for a superb co-op education at Kettering.

"Stephen would be pleased that this scholarship will help students at his alma mater achieve their potential," Bonnie commented at the concert. "Although he is no longer with us physically, he will continue to help students reach their goals. Some of Steve's tenets to live by included 'Always?do the right thing'; 'Continuous improvement'; 'Love change'; and 'Never underestimate the impact you have on others'".

When one considers that last sentence of never underestimating the impact on others, it is easy to conclude that Stephen's impact on students, and all the lives they will touch, cannot be overestimated. Indeed, he has achieved a form of immortality through the infinite numbers of students his scholarship will help.
